The Ocean Modern take
Few chairs carry their engineering so lightly. Warren Platner shaped this 1966 design from airy steel wire requiring as many as 1,000 welds, then cushioned it in upholstery from boucle to leather and velvet. The result is decorative yet distinctly modern, a sculptural seat that lets light play through its frame.
Style itUse a pair at the ends of a glass-topped dining table, or alone at a sunny writing desk.

From the maker
Warren Platner worked with design giants I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen before developing his Platner Collection (1966), which reflects his belief that there’s room in modernism “for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV.” This airy steel wire collection, for which he devised the structure and production method, requires as many as 1,000 welds per piece to create.
